How to Improve your Home Security

With homes with no security measures five times more likely to be burgled than those which have measures in place, it’s important to adopt a pre-emptive look when it comes to securing your home.

We run through some simple home security tips to help you safe guard your home.

Doors

In the majority of burglaries, criminals break into the home through the door – either by forcing the lock or kicking it in.

It’s important to ensure that you have a secure door in place as this will be the first place where criminals will try to gain access.

Greater Manchester Police recommended having a five-pin lock installed on your door to add an extra layer of protection. These can be commonly found on a wide range of doors available such as uPVC High Security Doors.

Doorstep Crime is becoming a more common form of home-burglary as seen in recent headlines.

Letterbox Fishing is a form of doorstep crime which involves thieves fishing a long pole through your letterbox and hooking the keys which are left nearby – allowing them to gain access to cars or the home without disturbance.

Post Shield devices can be installed over your letterbox which prevents anyone from fishing through your letterbox – whilst still allowing it to be used for its primary function.

Door Chains also add an extra-layer of security. With cold callers and bogus traders also another common form of doorstep crime, having a door chain will allow you to safely open the door to see who is one the other side while not allowing forced entry.

Windows

Windows are the other main access point for criminals during burglaries. It’s important to remember – especially during the hot summer months – to not leave windows open – especially when no one is home.

There are many different types of Window Security which can be used an the domestic home. Retractable Window Grilles are a popular choice for homeowners as they provide a secure aesthetic during the night and when the house is unoccupied but they can also be drawn back during the day.

Quick Tips for Improving Home Security

• Always lock your doors and windows securely (even if you’re just popping to the shops).
• Hide all keys out of sight from letterboxes/windows to prevent letterbox fishing.
• Install outdoor lighting to prevent any blind spots from your home. Keeping your garden neat and tidy also prevents burglars from hiding.
• Talk to your Neighbours – keep an extra eye out for any suspicious behaviour when the other neighbours aren’t around.
• Keep the Lights on – a common tip but a good one. Burglars will be more interested in a house which doesn’t appear to be occupied. Light timers are a good way of ensuring your home looks occupied when you’re out of the house.
• Don’t leave your valuables lying around. Try to avoid leaving expensive items such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones downstairs in view of the window. If a criminal sees something they like the look of – they’ll be more dedicated to get inside.
